In fact, if memory serves, it was one of the movies that pushed me toward my long-standing "No Casper Van Dien Flicks EVER" rental policy--I've never enjoyed anything he was involved in. :P

@Geo--it is frustrating when they don't give it that little extra oomph that turns a triple into a home run, but I still dug this one quite a bit. As to the reasoning behind 2.85, there's a complicated algorithm I use involving the movie's budget, the number of name actors, the frequency of continuity errors, the phase of the moon, and the shape of the blemishes on the liver of the goat sacrificed prior to the write up, and the Duke's number of sex partners (human and un- ) in the previous week. Rest assured I've checked the calculations thrice, and there is no error: 2.85 thumbs it is. ;)

@Fred--Those were the days! Now it's all Spongebob and Power Rangers and what have you. Though I understand the Power Rangers can be rather rapey and bloodthirsty off camera. As for Spongebob...

@db--thanks for the link! It was a batch of dollar-store dvd double-features that got the Duke and I started on this Internet Odyssey of ours, so I can never forego them completely. For every 20 or so complete piles of trash, there's one shining nugget like this. It's enough.

And BTW--I know a couple of people who suffer from dysinski. Although "suffer" is not quite the word. "Revel in" is closer. ;)The Vicar of VHShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06832137990485130735noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4032450846239938332.post-68175732112167159562009-11-17T01:19:39.460-06:002009-11-17T01:19:39.460-06:00I just wrote a bit about my conflicted love/hate f...I just wrote a bit about my conflicted love/hate for public domain box sets, particularly the Mill Creek editions. I will fully admit that I have a problem and have yet to hit rock bottom and have my moment of clarity. Grave of the Vampire is *exactly* the reason I keep going back to these things (which I actually picked up via a torrent back before I got kicked off Cinemageddon), and I have a sinking suspicion Night Screams will be my next stop. It's odd how comforting it is to have a big pile of this kinda stuff (even the absolute dreck) sitting next to the dvd player. I've been doing a lot of thinking about how much of this crap I watched and no longer consciously remember from my misspent youth, and once in a while I'll catch a film which is almost like a repressed memory (Pickup is my perfect example of that). Excellent review, sir!

(word verification: dysinski, which I think is a disease whose symptoms include megalomania, shrieking in German and cold Teutonic staring.)dbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08610914455757359201noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4032450846239938332.post-43040564894403220742009-11-16T20:48:08.801-06:002009-11-16T20:48:08.801-06:00This used to be a staple of WOR-Channel 9 in NYC&#...This used to be a staple of WOR-Channel 9 in NYC's weekday afternoon/Saturday morning horror rotation. Yep, nothing like coming home from a tough day at elementary school to watch Grave of the Vampire and its Count Rapey Dude and bloody nipple sucking baby scenes. They also used to show the two Count Yorga films and Deathmaster a lot as well, with very few cuts.Fredhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05768886260813823765noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4032450846239938332.post-16591082052811428182009-11-16T19:07:55.121-06:002009-11-16T19:07:55.121-06:00Aaargh, so upsetting to see something with this le...Aaargh, so upsetting to see something with this level of inherent Madness stop short of going over-the-top with a bit of added sleaze. What were they thinking? A tad bit more gore, a tweak up on the violence-meter, a bare breast or four, or - the Holy Grail - a coupl'a lusty lesbian vampires/satanists/schoolgirls mixing it up, and where would this one be?
Ah well.
Tell me, V., the 2.85... More than 2.75, but not quite 3.0. I was rather amused by Manfish, a '50s film with Lon Chaney Jr. as a sailor, but overall I, too, find myself opening this one less often than other Mill Creeks. Grave was entertaining, though, with an almost stereotypical Seventies unhappy ending. That's how I like 'em.Samuel Wilsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00934870299522899944noreply@blogger.com
