It's definitely worth tracking down, either to feed your nostalgia or to get a look for the first time at the kind of stuff that scared old timers like us when we were kids!

@Al Bruno III--I watched MANSQUITO when it aired on SciFi (now SyFy, which always makes me think of getting a penicillin shot), and while it was dumb fun, I don't know that it'll have the staying power of these 70s classics. But who knows? Nostalgia is a funny, unpredictable thing.

@Geo--thanks as always for the kind thoughts! As to the Duke and I getting joy from what we do here, I hope that much is obvious. Some might question our journalistic integrity for handing out so few bad reviews, but I think I speak for both of us when I say we're more inclined to celebrate than denigrate--after all, you have to find joy where you can in this life. Plus, it's my blog, and I'll geek out if I want to!

As to Geo and dfordoom's point about the lack of fun in modern movies, I think that's clearly true, and clearly a detriment. When I see stuff like CLASH OF THE TITANS remade through the filter of Frank Miller's 300, I have to just shake my head. At least we still have DEATHSTALKER and ATOR THE FLYING EAGLE to keep us warm! The Vicar of VHShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06832137990485130735noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4032450846239938332.post-66715700005787694222010-04-11T15:59:15.590-05:002010-04-11T15:59:15.590-05:00Geo asks: "Is it just me getting older and mo...Geo asks: "Is it just me getting older and more cynical, or have horror movies just about all ceased to be fun?"

For me the answer is definitely - yes! As horror and sci-fi movies have become slicker, more mainstream and more expensive they've started taking themselves too seriously, and producers are unwilling to take risks.dfordoomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02306293859869179118noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4032450846239938332.post-65389732392601004432010-04-11T10:16:33.494-05:002010-04-11T10:16:33.494-05:00Wow, thanks for the reminder of this one, Vicar. Guess I need to find it on DVD.
Is it just me getting older and more cynical, or have horror movies just about all ceased to be fun? That's one element that seems to make this movie - and many others like it - work (for lack of a better term). You can sense the crew just outside the frame enjoying what they're doing. It's more than just another paycheck. Case in point, here - the gargoyle effects. You know the effects crew went way beyond the producers' expectations.
And on that point, that's what makes your blog work - your and Mr. D. obviously take great enjoyment in your craft. Thanks once again for the entertaining review.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4032450846239938332.post-82407685248003270932010-04-11T01:40:50.633-05:002010-04-11T01:40:50.633-05:00I hadn't even heard of this one.
